Lymelife

lymelife

It’s 1979 on Long Island and Lyme disease has the suburban neighborhood on edge after neighbor Charlie (Timothy Hutton) has been diagnosed with the ailment.  The onset of the disease spurs, out of necessity, his wife (Cynthia Nixon) to go work for the real estate company of next door neighbor Mickey Bartlett (Alec Baldwin).  The two families’ intertwining relationships address love and lust, an idea that would seem to have no angles left unseen. Brothers Derick and Steven Martini as writers of the film, prove to have a fresh take on a concept that would seem to be obvious.  The direction of Derick Martini is straightforward yet subtle, moving the film on unexpected paths and positions.

Rory Culkin as Scott Bartlett, son of Mickey and Brenda (Jill Hennessey) is sensational.  It is obvious that Martini has an inherent eye for talent.  His casting is impeccable, his scoring is sentimental, and his story line is inventively vivid.  Lymelife won the coveted International Critics Award at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and was released April 8th in NY and LA theaters.  Check your local listings for a release near you.  It’s a 2009 film you don’t want slipping by.

Movie Highlight from 2008

December 31st, 2008

Check out some of the best movies, from their movie genre, of 2008.

1.Thriller: Let The Right One In

The Swedes make a movie about vampires that is unlike any other.  The film is beautifully done.

2.  Romance: Curious Case of Benjamin Button

This could possibly be one of the best movies of the year.  Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are amazing.

3. Drama: Elegy

An Isabel Coixet film where the idea of independent manhood is questioned by a sexual relationship gone serious.

4. Comedy: Hamlet 2

Seriously one of the funniest, most sacrilegious movies of 2008.  Steve Coogan, who plays Dana Marschz the struggling drama teacher, is a master at playing awkward.

5. Action: The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger gives a performance that will leave you with chills; he was the best Joker in Batman history (sorry Jack).  Aside from Christian Bales strange “Batman voice” the movie is a hit, certainly worth a place in your home theater collection.

6. Animated: Wall-E

I never thought an animated movie could be so incredibly moving.  Wall-E tells one of the best love stories of 2008. With little words and amazing animation it is by far one of the best films from 2008.

7. Foreign:  The Counterfeiters

It is a powerful film about a group of men in a concentration camp during World War II.  Based on the true story of the largest counterfeit project in the world to date.

8. Documentary:  Man on Wire

The gripping tale of a man who wants to walk between the twin towers in the air.  Phillipe Petit tells us about his amazing journey.

Jumble Pie

October 31st, 2008

From the start of Melanie Lynn’s novel I was unsure and frankly, quite skeptical of Jumble Pie‘s appeal.  The story tells of two unlikely friends and the pie that brings them together.  Immediately I placed this work of fiction in the category of a light drama such as “Ya-Ya Sisterhood” or “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”. True, the story is emotionally charged, yet halfway through I found myself entertained by the twists and turns played out by the characters.  People are not as they appear and life is anything but “a piece of pie”.

If you are looking to amplify your philosophical intellect this is not the read for you, but on a rainy day, if you have nothing better to do, pick up Jumble Pie.  You just may end up with a surprisingly satisfied afternoon.

Play It As It Lays

October 3rd, 2008

Maria, the protagonist of Joan Didion’s introspective work, has difficulty talking to people with whom she is not sleeping.” The 31 year old actress is unfulfilled personally and professionally.  Besides her 4-year old daughter, who is being treated at a facility for mental and physical issues, Maria feels a lack of purpose for her life. “To look for reasons is beside the point”, she says, “I am what I am.”

The voices of Play It As It Lays recount the psychological battle of a woman tormented by one regrettable decision. Guilt and misery, anger and fury seep from a single existence. Didion’s 1970 novel is, in the least, “beaucoop fantastic”.
