I never thought I would see the day when Anne Hathaway is caught on the big screen grinding up on a rope swing in a strip club. Thanks to Bride Wars that day has come. The bond between Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson) is one that most people only dream of, they are best friends since childhood, and until their boyfriends both proposed they were getting along just fine. Bride Wars was a surpirse hit, for once a romantic comedy that is not mediocre, its actually quite hilarious. Grab your best girlfriends, or guy friends(if you dare) and check it out.
Set in Mambai in 2003 this film takes you on a journey back through a young mans childhood. Simon Beaufoy based the screenplay on a book entitled “Q and A” by Vikas Swarup. It all starts when Jamal Malik, a poor 18 year old from India, is one question away from winning India’s version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.” When the show ends for the night Jamal is taken away and interrogated for cheating. As he explains how he knew the answers to each question the story of his life unfolds. This story of love, and family will have you at the edge of your seat more than once within its 2 hour time frame. Slumdog Millionaire , directed by Danny Boyle, is a must see.
Colin Firth, in my opinion the sexiest man in cinema today, broke my heart in And When Did You Last See Your Father?, the story of a man trying desperately to deal with the fact that his father is dying, a figure that has left unanswered questions and feelings of incapability. Swirling in and out of the present moment with flashbacks of growing up, the story unfolds revealing moments of joy that always seem to be tainted by a misery never understood.
The 2007 film directed by Anand Tucker is based on an autobiography by Blake Morrison and received generally positive reviews from the critics. I’d have to second that.
An experimental drug study leads one ordinary man to out of the ordinary behaviors. Check out this unique story about a hero and his special powers in theaters today, November 21, 2008.
A husband goes off to fight the war in Iraq. A wife (Lisa Kudrow) is left to take care of her two unruly boys and hold down the fort. An awkward and inane brother-in law (Scott Prendergast) is asked to help out with the kids. Kabluey, the mascot for a local business, brings these characters together as they rediscover the meaning of family, friendship and community. The movie is surprisingly hilarious, touching and captivating.
Successful as a professor and cultural critic, David Kepesh (Ben Kingsley) is brief and noncommittal in relationships with women because ”beautiful women are invisible… we are so dazzled by the outside we never make it in.” Ideals are altered by a magnetism Kepesh feels for the unique and radiant austerity of a student (Penelope Cruz) in one of his lectures. In “old age”, which Kepesh believes to be “the biggest surprise in a man’s life” he reflects on friendship, family, and most deeply, love.
Elegy is casted impeccably and the direction of Isabel Coixet is affecting.
Small plastic animals were being thrown into the crowd from a paper bag held by a scruffy looking man wearing a top hat. It was during the set up of the upcoming band, so I, along with friends, assumed he was a quirky part of the crew to keep the crowd alive and entertained. As time went on and Les Savy Fav began to play I was still convinced this man was not a member of a band, but rather slightly disturbed. Tim Harrington just might still be slightly insane, but along with that insanity comes a brilliant stage performer who puts on one of the weirdest, intriguing shows you could ever set your eyes upon.
Mr. Harrington has the element of surprise in his favor. One minute he is feeding cake to the crowd, the next he is climbing up the rafters of the stage in a skin tight belly shirt, and for the grande finale he sports a seemingly clear body suit, that was painted with human organs in their perspective places on Tim Harrington’s body.
Les Savy Fav is a little bit of rock and a little bit of roll, definitely one of those bands you want to listen to with the volume turned up. Keep an eye out for their new album INCHES; it is supposedly the album they have been writing since the band’s inception in 1995. Les Savy Fav will be playing this sunday, 10/12/08, at The Music Hall of Williamsburg. I highly suggest going to this show, the last thing you will be is bored.
