Nobody is laughing at Regina Spektor

June 4th, 2009

Regina Spektor’s new album Far is set for release June 23rd.  After watching her new music videos I think you will find yourself anxiously anticipating the 23rd.

Two Suns

April 15th, 2009

British Singer/Songwriter Natasha Kahn releases a new gem under Bat For Lashes.  True to form Kahn calls on forces of nature and human emotion to play the lead in each song, and masterfully crafts her music into whimsically unique tracks reminiscent of the ’80s.

“I will rise now, and go about the city…” quietly opens up Two Suns as Kahn sings the lyrics in echoey achapella, the lyrics are quickly found swirling in city sounds and pounding drums.  ”Moon and Moon,” the albums third track, calls on the moon to accompany a wife looking for her husband, it features Kahn on the piano and is sure to play right on your soul, don’t be surprised if this track has you closing your eyes in order to get the full effect.   “Traveling Woman” offers advice for survival in this wild world and just might have been Kahn’s theme song while writing and recording her second album as the process took place from Big Sur and Joshua Tree in California, to the Welsh Countryside, to London and New York.  ”The Big Sleep,” a duet with Scott Walker and Kahn, is a haunty sleepy track almost operatic in vocals that is perfectly appropriate to end Two Suns.  My favorite track off  Bat For Lashes‘ new album: “Pearl’s Dream.”

Dri

April 14th, 2009

You might know Adrianne Verhoeven as a member of The Anniversary, or Art in Manila, but the artist is now working on her solo career under her nickname Dri. dri-smoke-ringsThe album, Smoke Rings, is a collection of indie pop pieces.  The lyrics are reflections of heart break, love and moving on.  Dri will quickly have you hooked with clever lyrics like “whos in your heart is not always in your bed” and an irrisistible soulful-retro-vibe.

The Submarines

February 16th, 2009

The Submarines played Wednesday night the 11th at the Bell House.  John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard came together through friends and blossomed into a romance (how appropriate for the season).  But as many relationships do, theirs ended.  While broken up they continued to record and write songs and realized that their music was all about each other and the agony over the breakup.  These songs became their first album back in 2006, Declare A New State.

Now the couple is back together, married and making music that indie lovers are eager to support and listen to.  Their songs have been featured on major TV shows such as Nip/Tuck, Grey’s Anatomy, and Gossip Girl.  Weeds also had them record a cover of their theme song, “little boxes”.  Their second full length album, Honeysuckle Weeks, was released May of 2008 through the Canadian label Nettwerk.  This prime time indie pop album has gained interest from more than Television.  The film Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist includes “Xavia” on their soundtrack album.  Apple is using “You, Me and the Bourgeoisie” for their worldwide iPhone 3G commericals.

Complimenting of each other, they are.  In a world where only half of marriages survive, we can only hope that a couple who makes music together, as charming as they do, stays together.

Ray Guns are not Just the Future

January 16th, 2009

Inara George and Greg Kurstin are The Bird and The Bee.  the-bird-and-the-beeHailing from Los Angelas, Cali they have blamed their band’s inception on a common interest for jazz and one particular music sesh where they played every song they knew, which eventually led to their first EP Again and Again.

the-bird-and-the-beeJust two years after the release of their first full length album, The Bird and The Bee, the band is ready to release, Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future.  The peculiarly titled album is much anticipated and rightly so.  The second album from The Bird and The Bee’s is an eclectic mix of jazzy, electro, upbeat tunes.  It’s one of those albums that will never get you down.

The Teenagers

December 2nd, 2008

theteenagers

Last January saw the release of The Teenagers newest album Reality Check to mixed reviews.  Its the truth, The Teenagers put off a snide, smug, pretentious attitude on their debut album.  Reality Check will not dazzle you with vocal ability, or even complex beats, but it will keep your attention with its garish vibe.  Love them or hate them, The Teenagers are opening up for Vampire Weekend at Terminal 5, Tomorrow, Wednesday December 3rd.
