Slumdog Millionaire

January 8th, 2009

slumdog_millionaireSet in Mambai in 2003 this film takes you on a journey back through a young mans childhood.  Simon Beaufoy based the screenplay on a book entitled “Q and A” by Vikas Swarup.  It all starts when Jamal Malik, a poor 18 year old from India, is one question away from winning India’s version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.”  When the show ends for the night Jamal is taken away and interrogated for cheating.   As he explains how he knew the answers to each question the story of his life unfolds.  This story of love, and family will have you at the edge of your seat more than once within its 2 hour time frame.  Slumdog Millionaire , directed by Danny Boyle, is a must see.

Check out some of the best movies, from their movie genre, of 2008.

1.Thriller: Let The Right One In

The Swedes make a movie about vampires that is unlike any other.  The film is beautifully done.

2.  Romance: Curious Case of Benjamin Button

This could possibly be one of the best movies of the year.  Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are amazing.

3. Drama: Elegy

An Isabel Coixet film where the idea of independent manhood is questioned by a sexual relationship gone serious.

4. Comedy: Hamlet 2

Seriously one of the funniest, most sacrilegious movies of 2008.  Steve Coogan, who plays Dana Marschz the struggling drama teacher, is a master at playing awkward.

5. Action: The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger gives a performance that will leave you with chills; he was the best Joker in Batman history (sorry Jack).  Aside from Christian Bales strange “Batman voice” the movie is a hit, certainly worth a place in your home theater collection.

6. Animated: Wall-E

I never thought an animated movie could be so incredibly moving.  Wall-E tells one of the best love stories of 2008. With little words and amazing animation it is by far one of the best films from 2008.

7. Foreign:  The Counterfeiters

It is a powerful film about a group of men in a concentration camp during World War II.  Based on the true story of the largest counterfeit project in the world to date.

8. Documentary:  Man on Wire

The gripping tale of a man who wants to walk between the twin towers in the air.  Phillipe Petit tells us about his amazing journey.

Michelle Williams plays the part of Wendy Carroll, a girl out on the road trying to start out fresh.  As is life, Wendy’s journey turns out to be a struggle.  Her car breaks down en route to Alaska, with no money to fix the vehicle, Wendy is faced with arduous decisions in order to ensure her survival and Lucy’s, her dog.

Wendy and Lucy is Kelly Reichardt’s 6th film in the director’s chair.  The film has received nothing but good reviews and rightly so, Michelle Williams gives a performance that is guaranteed to give you the shivers.  The movie hit New York’s Film Forum Theater last night, Wednesday December 10th.

Mary Ellen Mark

December 2nd, 2008

Some times in order to believe it you have to see it.  Mary Ellen Mark has been using the art of photography to address issues like homelessness, drug addiction, and prostitution for over 50 years.  Her black and white photos can be found in Life magazine, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair. The work Mary Ellen Mark produces are technically beautiful as much as they are creative.

Simon Pegg(ed)

November 20th, 2008

If you were to ask who my favorite English actor was, I would tell you hands down Simon Pegg.  He is one of those brilliant actors that some how escapes the hollywood buzz boards and gossip mags, while pumping out hilarious flick after hilarious flick.  His goofy mannerisms, and adorable brit accent give him a lovable feel even while performing lewd, crude, and horribly funny acts on the big screen.  His resume includes movies like How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, Run Fat Boy Run, Hot Fuzz, and what could be considered his breakthrough role, Shaun of The Dead.

Simon Pegg’s most recent work in How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is a snug fit into Mr. Pegg’s repertoire of films.  This particular piece revolves around a quirky British journalist and his struggle to make a name for himself in the city.  The film combines dumb comedy, the kind where people fall, burp, break things, etc, and witty banter to create a hilarious 110 minutes for its viewers.

simon_peggHis next film, Star Trek, is due in theaters this May.  If you find yourself in the mood for a good laugh, check out Simon Pegg’s work.

War of the Wards

November 3rd, 2008

After watching Blindness I find myself questioning why I wanted to see this movie in the first place.  Basically, the world starts to become infected by a strange illness that causes blindness.  The government’s solution is to send those infected to an abandoned hospital where the unlucky individuals have to fend for themselves.   What first seems like a small problem, soon begins to plague thousands and the hospital fills up quickly.  When a few sour apples enter the building all hell breaks loose.  One of those apples smuggles in a gun and soon enough he has everyone broken up by ward, each paying him for food.

There are 3 scenes in the movie that aren’t completely painful to watch, but otherwise the movie is positively horrible.

Four Things I learned from Blindness:

1.  A sudden boute of blindness might cause an irresistible urge to rip off your clothes, it must be the age old saying “I cant see you… you cant see me”

2. Infidelity is an acceptable side effect of blindness.

3. Contrary to what people might think, blind people can see.

4. When in large crowds it is a necessity for the blind to wear matching orange coats if you want to stick together.

Let the Right One In

October 31st, 2008

Get Excited!  Halloween is on the way, and one of the best looking “scary” movies is in theaters now.  This Swedish film tells a poetic story about friendship, rejection and vampires.

Quick Review:

Like every other vampire movie this one is seductive and mysterious, unlike every other vampire movie it has a certain innocence never before seen in a a film on the subject.  The movie is beautifully shot, the acting is riveting, and the story is exciting.

Ive Loved You So Long

October 23rd, 2008

A gripping tale about two sisters reunited after 15 years, and one woman’s struggle to adjust to the outside world.  In theaters October 24th, 2008.

Kabluey

October 19th, 2008

A husband goes off to fight the war in Iraq.  A wife (Lisa Kudrow) is left to take care of her two unruly boys and hold down the fort.  An awkward and inane brother-in law (Scott Prendergast) is asked to help out with the kids. Kabluey, the mascot for a local business, brings these characters together as they rediscover the meaning of family, friendship and community.  The movie is surprisingly hilarious, touching and captivating.
