The U.K. gives birth to another elctro rock band, Late Of The Pier.  The four piece from Castle Donington formed in 2001 releasing singles sporadically.  They signed with Parlophone Records, whose artists include bands such as Radiohead, Hot Chip, and Bat For Lashes.  August of this year marked the release of their debut album Fantasy Black Channel.

The up and coming indie rock band has been compared to MGMT with their prominent usage of synthesizers and innovative fringes.

Friendly Fires

November 5th, 2008

Dubbed the “closest contender to an overwhelming buzz band” at the CMJ Music Marathon , Friendly Fires played 5 gigs in 4 days during the marathon madness.  The UK based band mixes up sounds from the 70′s and 80′s that give them a post punk feel to their sound.  It’s like disco, meets 80′s pop, meets indie rock, meets electronic.  In other words their music is magical.

Friendly Fires finished out the rest of October opening up for Lykke Li.  Come November you can find them across the waters as they continue their tour in Europe with theFoals.  You can also check out their latest album, “Friendly Fires” which was released this past September, 2008.

Give the Boy a Chance

October 15th, 2008

Eight years after its cinema release, Billy Elliot is back and this time, live.  With the original creative team in the wings, director Stephen Daldry, and writer Lee Hall, and new addition Elton John, Billy Elliot is on the fast lane to a Broadway hit.

The story takes place in the UK in the mid 80′s during a time when UK’s miners find themselves on strike.  Billy’s father has expectations for his future that involve boxing gloves and a championship, but when Billy catches a glimpse of the ballet class next to the ring everything changes.  It is a beautiful story of fate, and love.  If you haven’t seen the movie I highly suggest checking it out, and then buying a ticket to the new Broadway show.
